Frank Buglioni made the first defence of his British light-heavyweight title with an unanimous win over Ricky Summers in the main event at London’s O2 Arena.
Summers did not make it easy for Buglioni but the judges gave it to the Enfield man, scoring it 116-113, 115-114 and 118-111.
The first round was fairly even, with Buglioni landing a heavy right which was immediately replied to by the challenger.
Summers went up a gear in the second round but was met with a hard body shot towards the bell which visibly hurt him.
The third round continued to favour Buglioni who again fired his big right causing the challenger to stumble onto the ropes.
As the fight reached its second half the Summers started to find his mark and the tide turned against the champion. The fight began to move into the trenches with each fighter taking and receiving hard shots.
By the 11th round, Buglioni seemed to show superior fitness and caught his opponent with a combination of punches to which dazed Summers.
This was a very entertaining fight and it felt as though the judges’ wide margins might have flattered Buglioni somewhat.
What next for Buglioni?
The ‘Wise Guy’ has indicated that he wants to defend his belt in September, most likely against Hosea Burton who he beat in November. He’s also got WBA champion, Nathan Cleverly, in his headlights. It’s looking likely that the Welshman will be fighting Badou Jack on the Mayweather – McGregor card.
